AKA: Girl Surfer
Rochelle Ballard
In the late 90's, Rochelle Ballard was pivotal in earning the women's surf scene its due respect.

Rochy, as she is known to her peers, was in a position to set milestones that have never been achieved for women's surfing. Making videos, doing interviews, being an ASP surfer representative, she was the head of the media push that was moving from the "fun in the sun" surf girls, to the girls who were really performing.

Knowing she, and maybe women's surfing, was only going to have one chance at this opportunity for exposure and growth, Rochelle charged. She became the barometer for surfing in critical waves, with her enthusiastic approach to Backdoor, the Mentawais and later Teahupoo.

Although a World Title has eluded her thus far, Rochelle is the most popular woman surfer in the new millennium, and this is due to her contribution to the sports growth in exposure and performance. She is surfing contests with a newfound strategy and inspiration: relaxation.
